Fingerprinting green cardholders
The fingerprinting of Green Card holders is something that is done to verify the identification of the individual who has been granted it. The fingerprint is an essential part of the card, along with the signature and photograph of the person. Fingerprint technology is something that is used to quickly identify people, through storage of information on a central database. All foreign nationals entering the United States have to be fingerprinted when they go through Immigration at the airport, and naturally this technology has been incorporated into Green Cards. The Green Card is a much sought after thing, and it is something that the Government is keen to protect the integrity of. Being given a Green Card does not make you a citizen of the United States. For all intents and purposes you will still be a foreign national, just with the right to work and live legally within the United States. Part of the process in trying to eliminate fraudulent entries, is to make sure that you are who you say you are, by keeping your fingerprints on record. This is not a new technology in itself, but it is something that is an effective means of controlling the entrants into US soil. As soon as you enter the country you will be recorded somewhere in some database, so if any crime was committed, then you are already in the system. By fingerprinting Green Cardholders, they will have a permanent record. Fingerprinting Green Card holders helps to keep the organizational process of recording entrants efficient. Biometric technology has been much touted for passports too, and this is seen by the Government as a good way to protect their own interests and security. The United States is renowned for a being very security conscious, and with terrorist activity over recent years, the issue has been heightened to make sure that the people entering the country pose no threat. It is simply another method of screening the entrants who step onto US soil, as a lot of people do try and seek illegal entry. Fingerprinting Green Card holders is just a small step in the process of being granted the right to live and work in the United States legally. While it has raised some issues from campaigners who feel their privacy is increasingly at risk, other people see it as another good security step, and people with nothing to hide will have nothing to worry about. It is no more arduous than giving up your signature, and during the process of application for a Green Card, many aspects of your private life will have to be declared anyway.
